This was not my planned blog for this week but having recently read a report on Electric Vehicles (EV’s) I quickly became angry and thought I should address my anger issues through the medium that is my Energy blog.
So what got me so angry?
In this particular report (which to be fair was comprehensive) the term “Range anxiety” came up several times. I found it difficult not to wonder where this term came from. The term “Range Anxiety” had an almost deliberate feel to it. As if it had been planted in the article.
The article concluded by stating that those people who claimed to suffer from range anxiety are those people who had never driven an electric vehicle. However, to get to the conclusion required reading eighteen pages, after which point the term range anxiety would have already been subliminally implanted.
It was almost as if the reports purpose was to sell the idea of range anxiety. Range anxiety, yeah I know range anxiety. Oh by the way did I mention the range anxiety? It was terrible the whole house stunk of range anxiety.
Range anxiety, range anxiety! Wherefore art thou range anxiety?
All this needs addressing and I am bloody annoyed so here goes. RANGE ANXIETY my arse. Who does a 250mile trip on a regular basis anyway???
What % of the UK are they talking about? What a load of rubbish that is.
There always seems to be this question of “What if we run out of charge and need to go somewhere?” Is this not exactly the same problem for a petrol/diesel vehicle running out of fuel?? Errrrrr I think it is???
Wherefore art thou range anxiety? He has F***** Off, because he doesn’t exist. What is range anxiety in any case? It certainly is not a medical condition. Make no mistake this is Oil Industry propaganda.
The oil industry should justifiably be terrified by the barrel of the gun their profits before environment industry is now staring down. And, I for one am delighted. This is the environmental justice which has been a long time coming for the oil industry.
Right, rant over time to move on.
Could EV’s make us smarter?
Perhaps Electric vehicles will make us smarter. Will we see the birth of the social EV? Whereby we will have access to social EV’s which could be available like a Boris bike (Another moron).
The social EV’s would be bookable through an app no doubt. The EV’s could have charging points at their pick up and drop off points. Social EV’s could charge during the night and thus relieve stress on the grid and be used to balance the grid when not in use. This to me so far sounds like a great idea. We all own cars that spend significantly more time being idle than they do being driven.
What if we had the option of using a social EV?
Would we then reconsider purchasing a car? Maybe we would, especially if social EV's proved good value, reliable and were readily available.
The more I think about this the better the idea seems, maybe I will start a social car company. A lot of us have expressed the desire to own an electric car but for many people this is not yet a viable option. However, as our employers more towards allowing more staff to work from home perhaps employees will start to question their own car ownership.
Perhaps not owning a petrol/diesel vehicle would become more attractive if you had the option of both being able to work from home from time to time and when you did have to drive to work you had the option of driving a social car.
Think what social electric cars could do for air quality. A lot of people in cities such as London don’t own cars because they don’t need to thanks to the transport links they have access to. Maybe social EV’s could bridge this gap in the suburbs?
Watch this space, as I would suggest that the adoption of EV’s could potentially provide many far-reaching social solutions other than that of killing the environmentally unfriendly oil industry.
